The SCAS Teacher of the Year (TOY) Award for Excellence in Secondary School Science Teaching is awarded each year to a South Carolina high school teacher who demonstrates the capability necessary to motivate, stimulate and enable students to learn and apply scientific principles to the best of their abilities.
The TOY award consists of a monetary stipend, a plaque and a citation honoring the achievements of the selected Teacher of the Year. The winning candidate will be honored at the annual meeting of the South Carolina Academy of Science on April 14-16, 2009 at the Columbia Convention Center. Click here for a list of previous winners.
Nominations are accepted from the principals, superintendents, science coordinators and colleagues of the candidate, as well as from parents of students and from school board members. Nominations from currently enrolled high school students cannot be accepted. After nominations have been received, each candidate will be asked to submit a biographical sketch and two letters of recommendations to the Selection Committee for evaluation.
If you wish to nominate a science or mathematics teacher in your district for the 2009 Teacher of the Year, please complete the nomination form (to be posted online soon) and return it to Linda Sinclair, POSTMARKED or via FAX by December 12, 2009. Remember to re-nominate outstanding teachers, since only one is selected from each year's group, and a nominee who may have been a runner-up last year could very well be this year's winner!
